Once.
January 4, 2012
I've told you all before that I'm usually a couple years late seeing good movies. This time I was about 5. Better late than never, right?
B watched the movie Once the other night (he was having a camp out in the playhouse with the kids and watched it on his laptop while they were sleeping....yes, it is about 84 degrees right now during the day and the nights have been blissfully warm!) He immediately had me come watch a few of his favorite parts with him after it ended. The next night, he insisted we watch it together.
All I can say is I loved every minute of it. It is a sweetly intimate, simple story that is also very powerful. And the music, written by the two main actors, is fantastic (OMG! this song!). B declared it the best movie ending he had seen in as long as he could remember. I told him I would be a better person if I could watch a movie like that once a week. (Hey, we might have had some wine that night, what can I say?) I know for sure that I fell asleep that night thinking about it and woke up the next morning doing the same thing. Gah, I love when that happens.
Have you seen it? Did you love?

One of my favorites! The music still makes my playlists...I may have to watch it again!
ReplyDeleteI'm always up for a review of a 5-year-old movie. I think I'm quite on top of things because I'm now watching the first season of Downton Abbey--only one year behind.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a favorite movie of mine. So simple and lovely.
ReplyDeleteyes, loved it! Certain movies are just so sweet and dreamy. I felt similarly this year when watching Somewhere by Sofia Coppola.
ReplyDeletethis is so weird -- I haven't seen Once yet either. But I loved the song that won the oscar, and used to listen to it on my ipod nonstop. Anyway, last night as I was falling asleep I was thinking to myself, I really need to see Once.... swear.
ReplyDeleteRachel....ok that is VERY weird. We watched it last night!
ReplyDeleteOnce is on my top 5 list. Saw it in the theatre while very pregnant with Maia. I think it was in fact the last movie I saw pre-kids. Listened to the soundtrack in the delivery room and constantly ever since. Gave my dad the dvd and soundtrack that Xmas. Very near and dear to my heart.

ReplyDeleteOne of the most beautiful, soulful movies. So inspired. I took Michael to see it at Landmark in the old 'hood and prepped him; "it's a musical (he can't stand musicals?), but unlike anything you've ever seen and I think it'll be amazing". It's one of those films that you are so happy for your pals to see because it DOES add something special to your life. If you'd like to "borrow" the soundtrack I have an extra copy. xo
ReplyDeleteI've never seen it, but now I need to. Especially since I think the actress and I might have the same nose, and I've been feeling very self-conscious about my nose lately...
ReplyDeleteYes, saw it two years after it came out & it's a favorite! I saw them in concert as The Swell Season (the band they formed following the movie) two months after I saw the movie. It was a wonderful show, so moving.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a documentary was made on them recently: http://www.theswellseasonmovie.com/screenings/. Sadly, I missed a local screening in November.
Movies like that are my favorite. It's been a LONG time since I've had one that captured me like that. It's now at the top of my list.
ReplyDeleteI have seen it and I did love it. I'm glad you love it too. "The" song...swooning just thinking about it.
ReplyDeletejbhat
Wow, haven't seen it, but now need to. I crave movies (or books, etc) that stay with me like that. I need to watch more movies, period. I'm always out of the loop!
ReplyDeleteYes, and I loved it! I think I've seen it a few time and the music always stays with me for months! Such a beautiful story without all the predictable Hollywood plot twists.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen this one because, like you, I'm way behind on movie watching. But after hearing your review, I'll be sure to check it out. And that song is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love the movie so much that I own it! I highly recommend seeing The Swell Season in concert... If you love the movie, you will triple love the concert...
ReplyDeleteThey are just so, so talented...
Love that movie. Love the soundtrack. Love that the two leads fell in love (for a while anyways). Pretty romantic!
ReplyDeleteOkay, have not seen it, but after reading this and the comments, I must- SOON.
ReplyDelete(funny, during the last week, on our vacation, i realized that watching certain types of films literally make me a happier/more loving/sillier, etc. person... after having watched a totally cheesy movie- The Holiday... and despite it's cheesiness, i thought, 'i need to watch movies more often.')
I watched this movie last night and Loved it. Thank you for posting about it.
ReplyDeleteWe had the same reaction when we saw the movie 5 years ago. BUT, it was topped this past summer when we saw him and Eddie Vedder on tour. They both sang Falling Slowly and it made us cry (Vedder is our favourite singer and we we were watching them both in our city - NY).
ReplyDeleteHere is a clip from PJ20

I just watched this tonight for the first time. Such a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteI live in the NY area - and on the news last night they just said that this movie is or will be a MUSICAL coming to BROADWAY! I thought it/the characters looked familiar! Now I must see the movie - before the show at least!
