Well, it is officially here. I hope you eat many, many ice cream cones and popsicles this summer. I know we will. And I plan on making quite a few of these popsicle recipes (vietnamese coffee? melon with mint, honey and yogurt? yum!). I also want to try some of these boozy popsicles (campari and grapefruit? yes, please!) that I have had dog-eared for at least 5 years now. I figure that will make the moms want to come over for more pool playdates, right?

1. This rosé wine. (Thanks to Alice for reminding me just how perfect it is.) I have my official drink of Summer 2010 and I am very happy about it. Do you have yours?

2. Seu Jorge. Seriously obsessed with this man since James turned me on to him. (Thanks Robo!) Have I mentioned how much I love a good cover? (This is what David Bowie had to say: "Had Seo Jorge not recorded my songs acoustically in Portuguese I would never had heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.")

3. My new wood beads. Aren't they pretty and perfect?
4. This margarita recipe by Rick Bayless. The cucumber makes it extra special perfect. Truly. Like I said on Facebook awhile back, Mr. Bayless' voice could make me do just...about... anything.

5. Straightening some *stuff* up in my life. Very liberating.

Poor C-Man hasn't been getting much coverage here (heck noone and nothing has been getting much coverage here!), so I feel the need to let you know what has been going on with him. Like: Finished up his first year of kindergarten. Got a haircut (bye-bye big fat baby curls!). Fractured his finger and got a (bright red) cast, just in time for summer.The good news: kids grow and heal so quickly, he only has to wear it for 3 weeks!

Well, for the longest time I have had The Perfect Villa in the French Countryside up there mulling around....rustic, modern, simple, gorgeous. And today, I can finally confirm it does indeed exist. To wit:

Eight Months.

Last week, Little E turned eight months. Here's what's going on with her right now: sitting up, got a tooth, continuing to perfect her army creep/crawl, repeating back different sounds to us (we sound like a bunch of babbling fools doing with this with her all day long), eating whatever she can get her fat hands on (but we are trying to limit that to orange and green vegetables and soft fruits...please, no more red construction paper, little girl!).
She still has the crazy long tongue ...
....which she uses to make lots of raspberries.There's her little tooth. Ouch, is all I'm going to say. She has also perfected downward-facing dog. (She has knees in there somewhere, I'm sure.)

Dude. Duuuude. This is why you shouldn't have a girl. There is simply way too much cute stuff out there for her to wear.

Thanks (I think....) to a heads up from Kristina, I was able to score my favorite dress yet for Miss JuJu (and that's saying something!)...out of the virtual $15 bin at Parasols. I think she feels a little special in it too. Take a peek:

On My Mind: Summer Vacations.

If you haven't noticed, we haven't been doing much travel these days. You know, with the small children and all. And for the most part, I'm perfectly A-OK with that. I honestly don't want to be packing for all of us, entertaining three youngsters on a plane ride, trying to convince them to sleep in strange beds, adjusting to time changes, etc., etc. etc. I know there are those families out there who don't see it this way. And to them? My hat's off to you.

But, I am craving a vacation something FIERCE right now. And not something sweet and simple with the kids. Something far, far away. To make the whole travel-with-wee-ones worth it, you know? So we are in the market for a vacation home. We are thinking about this one on the island of Salina (off the northern coast of Sicily).

Hahahahahahahahahaha. HA. Haha.
Since we decided this isn't quite what we are looking for, I can pass along the offer to you.

p.s. Can I come visit? Like all summer long?

We had dear friends Bill and Cindy (and their daughter cool is that name by the way?) come stay with us this weekend. This is all we did: talk, eat, hang out by the pool and drink wine. And my parents took C-Man and JuJu for a good potion of it. It was a blessed weekend. Despite my recent absence from the kitchen, I cooked a lot. Nothing too fancy or involved. It was nice to be back in there, however, and feeding the people I love.

It's That Time of Year: Swim Lessons.

One month ago, JuJu was completely afraid of the water. Like wouldn't put her face in. We recently gave her the same lessons we gave C-Man two years ago and she was swimming in two days. I am not exaggerating. Now she can swim from one end of the pool to the other and she jumps in the water without anyone there to catch her and will swim to the side (see darling video below). I simply can't say enough for these swim lessons. Ten days, a few hundred dollars and you are "guaranteed" a swimmer! The best part, however, is not the swimming part. It is seeing the confidence and pride spread over your two year old's face as she conquers her fear for the first time in her life. Hopefully she will have a lifetime of conquering other fears and learning new (and scary) things! Yay JuJu!

Cookies: Because It's the Little Things, People.

Friends. I am seriously sleep-deprived. Like deliriously sleep-deprived. Little E cut a tooth, got a cold and now I think she is just in the habit of waking up every two hours, then wanting to stay up from about 4:30 to 5:30 (yes, that would be the a.m.) before going back to sleep for a bit. Oh, and have I mentioned I cannot do the whole cry it out thing? I am weak. Very weak.

My doctor has told me sleep deprivation is not good for one's "mood." My husband can confirm this beyond any doubt. So, I have taken to little things to cheer me up a bit. Like these cookies here.

Said cookies made their debut (to me anyway) about two years ago in the Gourmet issue about Southern Cooking. The recipe then ignited across blogland (perhaps you remember Molly gushing about them?). I made these babies A LOT in 2008, but as is my usual M.O., I burned out on them and then filed them away in some deep dark closet of my brain.

Enter: First Weekend and BBQ of Summer. I wanted to make something a bit summery and simple. Ahhhh, yes. Buttermilk Cookies. I cannot think of another cookie that would go better with a glass of iced tea or lemonade.

Buttermilk Cookies

I finally realized why I like these cookies so much; they remind me of madeleine cookies. I don't have a madeleine pan but have always wanted to try making them. With this recipe, I don't think I ever will!

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest (I always add quite a bit more)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2/3 cup well-shaken buttermilk
1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
3 tablespoons well-shaken buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350°F with rack in middle. Butter 2 large baking sheets.

Whisk together flour, zest, baking soda, and salt. Beat together butter and sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition, then beat in vanilla. Mix in flour mixture and buttermilk alternately in batches at low speed, beginning and ending with flour mixture, until smooth.

Drop level tablespoons of dough about 1 1/2 inches apart onto baking sheets. Bake, 1 sheet at a time, until cookies are puffed and edges are golden, 12 to 15 minutes per batch. Cool cookies on sheets 1 minute, then transfer cookies to racks.

Glaze cookies:
Whisk together all glaze ingredients and brush onto tops of warm cookies. Let stand until cookies are completely cooled and glaze is set.

Cooks' note: Cookies are best the day they're made but can be frozen, wrapped well, up to 1 month.
