Outdoor Movie Night.

October 5, 2010

One of the things B and I wanted to do this summer was have an outdoor movie party down by the pool. I imagined people floating in the water and sprawling on the day beds watching Roman Holiday, noshing on truffled popcorn and sipping cocktails.  Oh, it would also be very warm and there would be a full moon, of course.  Well, that didn't happen.  The summer was too cold, too short, and we never got around to buying a projector.

But, it just so happens B bought one a couple of weeks ago (for a mediation that sadly went awry, but I digress....). Luckily, it came in handy the other night when our friends Iris and Dan came over with their daughter for a Portuguese BBQ (thanks to the cooking and provisions of Iris, who is from Portugal). We set up the projector in the courtyard off the hallway and turned on The Sound of Music for the kids while the adults ate grilled sardines and drank Vinho Verde on the upper deck. It was so nice to have the movie in the background of our evening, I must say.  And guess what?  There was a full moon and it was the warmest night all year long!

  1. don't you love it when things just turn out right? I do! My little sis is named Iris and I enjoy BBQs (mostly Brazilian style). We have so much in common :)

  2. Oh, that looks like so much fun -- the movie, but also the adults table. :) I may just have to scare up a projector for a movie night myself some time before it gets too cold. Uh, where do you buy a projector, one of those stores I never go into, like Radio Shack or Best Buy?

  3. Ahh, this reminds me of watching an outdoor movie in the park in Lausanne, Switzerland. That looks downright indulgent; color me jealous. --Jen L.

  10. Ah, lovely! Now, if it had been Roman Holiday (my all-time fave) I would have had to do something drastic. Like buy a projector and a HUGE heat lamp :)

  11. that is the dreamiest night, E.V.E.R. i too have had long standing daydreams about outdoor movies in the garden under a summer sky. last year we bough the whole kit. projector, screen, speakers. i hooked up an apple tv and had over about 15 kids. it was fun in the end, but there were a few things i didn't count on. 1.) that in the summer, it stays light sooo long, our kids are still too young to wait around until 10pm for movie, and 2.) mosquitos. lots of them. blah. it was still very nice, but somehow not as nice as i had hoped. maybe we need to come to california so you can show us how to do it right!

  18. Jora what a great night. Everything looks perfect! I like your blog and the way you write. I have 2 little girls, and it’s a lot of work! Even having maids (In my country it’s very common to have maids). Reading your blog has inspired me to enjoy more life, kids, work, family, and worry less about everything that involves being a mom and wife.
    Thank you!

  21. OMG. That wall is perfect for projection! I can't wait to show my children the Sound of Music. We watched it annually on tv (along with Wizard of Oz)... the beauty of living with only 3 channels of tv. :)

  22. Everything looks so gorgeous!! Movie nights are such fun with the kids and adults, we host them out behind our pool near the allee garden. I see a comment/question above re. where to purchase. We bought ours from projector people a few years ago , I think it was a little over $1,00- &1,500?? but can't remember for sure. So worth every penny.
    I want the grilled sardines!

  23. You're kids are so cute! And I commend you for being so resourceful in making your children enjoy. In Denver outdoor movies are family's weekend night out. Our parents used to bring us out every summer. Concert Denver is fun too, if you want to have some variations of enjoyment. It was fun; I hope we could still do it sometime next summer.

  25. I am new to your blog and I love it! I found it through another great blog that I follow (Live Love Small).

My dream of dreams is to have outdoor movie nights. I have a huge collection of films and there is nothing better than a balmy evening and a movie under the stars.
I am just stumped as to what kind of projector to buy.
